AtlantECO Project

Understanding the Atlantic Ocean

A research and innovation project that will assess and predict the health of the Atlantic Ocean and better manage the ecosystem services it provides to society.

The AtlantECO Project is linked to the Blue Growth Call of the European Union’s Horizon 2020 (H2020) Program. AtlantECO will analyze how marine regions and their ecosystems are connected along the latitudes (North-South) and continental limits (Brazilian and African coasts) of the Atlantic Ocean, developing models that take into account the dynamic processes of the marine environment, such as large river plumes and ocean circulation. In addition to future climate scenarios, these models will help predict species migration, the ocean’s ability to capture and store atmospheric CO2, the transport and risks of pollutants such as plastics and nutrients, and the balance between ecosystem health and activities. human.

The Project is developed in partnership with 36 institutions from 13 countries in Europe, Brazil and South Africa. We also have partners from other countries, such as the United States and Argentina.
