Marine Litter
A threat to all forms of life
A threat to all forms of life
The marine litter represents a growing global problem and a threat to all life forms on this planet. Plastic materials are the major source of marine pollution, especially damaging the ecosystems as they fragment into microscopic pieces that circulate and accumulate in various areas of the oceans. The so-called microplastics already surpass the stars of our galaxy in number and in some regions there is already one microplastic for every five fish. Yet, so far worldwide, the leadership in addressing this issue has been made mainly by NGOs. However, this is unsustainable due to the increasing costs and demands of implementing the actions that the problem requires. For this reason, the marine litter begins to gain momentum in the political agenda and the legislation of some countries. As more evidence emerges about its multidimensional impact, marine litter must be of greater importance to the Brazilian government and society. In this way, Brazil should assume a leading position due to our distinguished abundance of natural resources, eg. Pre-Salt reservoirs.
Our proposal is to develop and share studies related to the issue of Marine Plastic Litter to increase knowledge and create awareness in society, for the need of a more collaborative approach to the mitigation, resolution and prevention of this growing global problem.
