The Problem of the Marine Litter

The problem of plastics in our seas and in our food has been pointed out, together with the acidification of the oceans, as one of the most serious problems that can irrevocably affect the life of a healthy planet.

With the goal of reversing the extremely catastrophic scenario that indicates the trend of more plastics in the oceans than fish, UNEP launched the Clean Seas campaign (#CleanOceans) on February 23, 17, as a global initiative to bring together public and private sectora to establish concrete measures to mitigate the problem of water pollution.

In this context, the ECO sailboat and its team of researchers, organizers of this international event with the theme MARINE LITTER OF THE SOUTH ATLANTIC, appears as a possibility to organize a research network and initiatives to mitigate and raise awareness of communities, especially on the coasts and islands of the coast Brazilian. Concomitantly with the meeting of researchers, governmental and private sector, will be carried out the launching and baptism of the Sailboat ECO – Scientific and Oceanographic Expeditions.

Aim

General objective

To bring together the main actors of academia, government and private sector, with interest in developing solutions to mitigate the impacts caused by MARINE LITTER, defining strategies for changes in different levels of production, consumption and disposal of plastic materials and studies related to monitoring and Control of marine pollution

Specific objectives

  1. Performing education and environmental awareness actions with audio-visual presentation during the “Mostra de Curta-Metragens” on the subject of sustainability and the oceans;
  2. Formation of a research network focused on the South Atlantic to identify and implement initiatives for the conservation of marine life;
  3. Definition of work groups by topic that may develop scientific, technological and innovation research projects, focused on the main problems related to marine litter, using the ECO Sailboat as a research platform;
  4. Development of audiovisual material during the meeting to disseminate knowledge related to Marine Litter, through environmental education programs.
